What is Oolong Matcha?

Oolong Matcha is crafted using the same time-honored techniques as traditional green tea matcha. Both are shade-grown, gently steamed, and ultra-finely milled to preserve vibrant color, freshness, and vitality.
The distinction lies not in method, but in leaf. We begin with carefully selected, premium oolong cultivars chosen for their natural creaminess and aromatic depth.
After this foundational processing, the leaves undergo a very light, controlled oxidation (under 10 percent). This subtle step enhances body and softness, resulting in a cup that feels fuller and silkier, with quiet complexity and minimal bitterness.
What makes ceremonial-grade special?
For our ceremonial blends, the tea plants are shade-grown for 21 days before harvest in the traditional Japanese technique.
Shading increases amino acids—especially L-theanine—and boosts chlorophyll, resulting in a richer color, smoother mouthfeel, and calmer, more focused energy.
During harvest, only the first bud and two youngest leaves—the finest and sweetest part of the tea plant—are hand-picked, then carefully processed and milled into an ultra-fine powder.
Like traditional matcha, Oolong Matcha is consumed as the whole leaf, allowing higher concentrations of antioxidants, catechins, amino acids, and micronutrients in every sip.
The result bridges two worlds: the smooth elegance and natural creaminess of oolong with the focus and structure of matcha.
What Does Oolong Matcha Taste Like?
Oolong Matcha looks, whisks, and feels very similar to traditional matcha.
On the palate, it’s smooth and creamy, with gentle nutty tones, subtle florals, and a natural sweetness that unfolds gradually. Compared to green matcha, the flavor is deeper and more layered, yet still clean and easy to drink.
Does Oolong Matcha Contain Caffeine?
Yes. Caffeine levels vary by style. Amounts below are per 1.5 tsp (3 g) serving:
-
Ceremonial & Jasmine Oolong Matcha: ~90 mg
(≈ an 8 oz cup of coffee is ~95 mg) -
Oolong Matcha (Culinary): ~45–60 mg
(≈ an 8 oz cup of black tea is ~47 mg) -
Oolong Hōjicha: ~25–30 mg
(≈ an 8 oz cup of green tea is ~28 mg)
Thanks to naturally occurring L-theanine, Oolong Matcha delivers smoother, more focused energy without the sharp spike or crash of coffee.
What Are the Health Benefits of Oolong Matcha?
Oolong Matcha contains naturally occurring antioxidants, catechins, polyphenols, and amino acids found in whole-leaf tea. When enjoyed regularly, it is associated with:
-
Calm, sustained energy and focus from caffeine paired with L-theanine
-
A smoother, less astringent drinking experience than traditional green matcha, influenced by oolong cultivars
-
Antioxidant support from catechins and polyphenols in shade-grown leaves
-
General wellness benefits traditionally linked to regular tea consumption, including heart and skin health
How Do I Prepare Oolong Matcha?
Do not use boiling water (212°F / 100°C). Boiling water scorches the fine tea powder, dulling sweetness and umami while amplifying bitterness and astringency.
Oolong Matcha
Sift 1½ tsp (3 g) into a bowl. Add 2 oz (60 ml) hot water (180°F / 82°C) and whisk until frothy. For a stronger cup, use 3 tsp (6 g). Enjoy straight or with 5–7 oz (150–200 ml) milk (we recommend oat milk), hot or iced. Sweeten to taste, if desired.
Oolong Hōjicha
Sift 1½ tsp (3 g) into a bowl. Add 2 oz (60 ml) hot water (185°F / 85°C) and whisk until frothy. For a stronger cup, use 3 tsp (6 g). Enjoy straight or with 5–7 oz (150–200 ml) milk, hot or iced. Sweeten to taste, if desired.
Oolong Matcha also works beautifully iced, blended into lattes or smoothies, or incorporated into baked goods.
Do I Need Special Tools?
A bamboo whisk (chasen) creates the best froth, but it isn’t required. A handheld milk frother, blender, or even a sealed jar shaken vigorously will work.
Using a sifter is highly recommended—it breaks up fine clumps formed during storage, helping the powder dissolve evenly and produce smoother foam.
A chawan (matcha bowl) is traditional and makes whisking easier, but any wide-mouthed bowl or cup works just fine.
